5 Things you must do your on your first visit to Cozumel. I love the Mexican Caribbean Island of Cozumel, and since I’ve been going there for over 30 years, I feel I know it pretty well! If you are headed to Cozumel for the first time let me help you by suggesting the activities you must do and the sights you must see.

SNORKEL OR SCUBA DIVE

Cozumel is an underwater paradise with crystal clear blue seas and 100 feet of visibility. It is a mecca for anyone who wants to dive or snorkel the second largest reef system in the world. Jacques Cousteau talked about the beauty of Cozumel back in the 1960s, and it is still one of the most popular islands on the planet for divers and snorkelers. Cozumel is located ten miles off the Yucatan peninsula and is easily accessed by ferry from the mainland. Colorful tropical life exists both above and below the surface. If you love to snorkel, Cozumel is for you, and if you have never tried scuba diving, it is the perfect place to start. On your first visit to Cozumel, you have to see the underwater world!

CHANKANAAB PARQUE AND CABANA BEACH

The top attraction in Cozumel is Chankanaab Parque, where you can see Chankanaab Lagoon, dive, snorkel, eat, and just relax. The Cabana Beach is just next door and includes admission to the park. The Cabana Beach is a private beach club with 12 exclusive cabanas for daytime use with different capacities for you and your family. Enjoy the wonders Cozumel has to offer while a personal concierge takes care of you, try exclusive dishes, drinks, recreational activities, and anything else you may need while you sit back and enjoy the stunning views of the Mexican Caribbean to the sound of the ocean. A must on your first visit to Cozumel!

COZUMEL PEARL FARM

Cozumel Pearl Farm

Cozumel has a Pearl Farm and it is the only one in the Caribbean!  this wonderful family from Mexico City had a dream, and they have made it a reality. Isa Caamaño gave us a fantastic tour, and since she is the biologist in the family, we really learned about the biology of pearl farming. Her enthusiasm is infectious! The story of the farm could be made into a movie. Dad was a successful contractor in Mexico City, but had a dream of starting a pearl farm in Cozumel. The entire family became involved in the project, and they started up in the early 2000s. In 2005, WILMA came along and destroyed everything, and I mean every single thing on the farm and the island. They decided to stay and rebuild, and in doing so, have created unique technologies and a successful business. They have also called upon Our Lady of Guadelupe, the patron saint of Mexico, to help. Visiting the Pearl Farm is a must do on Cozumel!

GO TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE ISLAND

East Side of the Island

Almost all of Cozumel’s attractions and businesses exist on the West Side of the island, the leeward side. The water is calm and clear. The East Side of the island is very different. The entire east coast of the island faces out to open ocean meaning big waves and gorgeous sandy beaches. There are many beaches on the wild side with restaurants and marked off coves for swimming. You can swim safely in the coves, but keep in mind that if you choose to swim on the wild side away from the coves, there are strong currents and undertow. It is best not to swim except in the coves. I highly recommend renting a car and taking a drive around the whole island. Be sure to fill up your car before you go to the wild side, because there are no gas stations over there!

PUNTA SUR

Punta Sur marks the southern point of Cozumel and is part of the Parque Punta Sur, a 247-acre (1.00 km2) ecological park that covers the reefs, beaches, lagoons, and jungle of the surrounding area. The reef system is also part of the Cozumel Marine Park. Entering Punta Sur is to transport yourself to a natural paradise filled with diversity of birds and animals, many of which are endemic to the island. There is also a scenic tower to observe crocodiles in their natural habitat and a museum light house with the most spectacular view. Some of the beaches are protected to allow hatching for sea turtles from April to August. Observation towers have been erected at the Columbia lagoon to watch wildlife. Punta Sur is especially nice in the dry months of November to May.

5 Things you must do on your first visit to Cozumel.

Take my word for it!
